29/11/10 What's Going on in BD Class?

We kicked the day off with story writing today. Mr D shared about his slightly unfortunate weekend.

After writing we looked at our long "e" sounds using "ea" and "ee". We found out there are lots of homophones that use these sounds:
meat & meet
steal & steel
bean & been
Now that is pretty tricky.

We started to look at fractions today. We watched the Number Crew. That gave us a good idea about what fractions will be about.
Then we checked out some games that can help us to learn about fractions. Check these out by clicking on the pictures.

25/11/10 Remembering Pike River

Today we had chat about what happened at the Pike River mine. It was sad to hear about the people who died. We made candles to remember the miners and so we could remember their families as well.

Our love and thoughts to those families who have lost loved ones.

24/11/10 What's Going On in BD Class?

We had a great day with Mrs Stewart today. We started off the morning with working on our group narratives. Leo's mum came and helped us too. For maths, we did some more work about area. We had to make a quilt for baby bear. We had to work our how many pieces would make his quilt. This is what we found out.
After linch, Leo's Grammy came in and did some drama with us. We were learning to use our faces to show different feelings. See if you can guess what feelings are being shown in these pictures.

23/11/10 What's Going On in BD Class?

This morning we started off with printing. We have all got a bit slack with forming our letters properly so Mr D got us to make sure that we were trying our best. Mr D was much happier with all of us because we were remembering to start in the right place.
For writing, Mr D got us into groups and we had a go at planning a  new narrative. We had to think about our Introduction, Problem, Solution and Resolution. Once we planned our introduction we wrote it in our writing books. Tomorrow we will be finishing them off.
This afternoon we went for a wander around the school to look at some different environments. We took photos of them then looked at them when we went back to class.

We did a Thinking Hats Analysis on the Adventure Quad.

Then we had a go at doing another one in our groups. What a cool day!

22/11/10 What's Going On in BD Class?

Everyone has been working hard today in BD Class. This morning we got a fright when Robert and Eddie shared the news with us. We thought that Eddie got jammed as well. Luckily he was only tricking.
For writing we did our weekend recounts. We were making sure we used our yellow, red and white thinking hats to help us write our stories.

In reading, we looked at all the Letterland characters that make the long "a" sound. We looked for those sounds in our reading groups when we read to Mr D.
For maths we were learning to make and read bigger numbers. First we looked at what happened when we got ten ones. Then we looked at making numbers with groups of tens. You can have a go on this website: Making numbers.

19/11/10 What's Going On in BD Class?

Today has been a very productive finishing off day. We had a surprise fire drill at 9:30 this morning. We were very responsible and got outside to line up quickly on the field. Everyone has finished their Comic Life instructions now. Yay!

We did a new poem called the Junglies. We had to imagine what a junglie might look like and use our idea to illustrate our poems. We also finished publishing our Guy Fawkes stories with our fireworks art. After such a busy day we all deserve a break. Have a great weekend everyone.

18/11/10 What's Going On in BD Class?

We patted ourselves on the back this morning thanks to Robert and Eddie congratulating us about our blog success. It's funny when they try to be rappers. We had another go at narrative writing this morning. We picked another character to write about. Soon we will be having a go at doing our own stories.
Mr D modelled an introduction for us. We had to highlight the things that made it a good introduction.

17/11/10 What's Going On in BD Class?

Well it has been a really cool day today. Mr D got this email today.

Hi Barri,

Thanks for entering the INTERFACE Awards. I’m delighted to tell you that you are the runner up in the ‘Best Class Blog’ category. Congratulations! The standard of entries was extremely high this year and this was a very competitive section. Your entry was excellent. You’re doing some great work with the blog!

We will be making the official announcement on our website later today – and in the latest issue of the magazine (November), which is distributed today.

I will also make arrangements for your prize (a 500GB Toshiba Canvio portable hard drive) to be delivered. I’ll be in touch again soon.

Well done once again.

We are really proud of what we have achieved. We think it is pretty cool that a bunch of 6 year olds have done such awesome work. So well done everyone! The winning blog was from a class in Palmerston North. Well done to them! You can check out the interface website to find out about the winners.

This morning we did some cool maths with Mrs Stewart. We were learning about area. Area is another way of saying "filling up the space." We used different shapes to try and fill up a piece of paper. It was interesting to see which shapes worked best.

We did some great reading today. The books we are reading are more challenging but we are learning to use different strategies to work out hard words.

We finished off our first narratives today and wrapped up the day with some PE. What a cool day.

Good news!

Runner-Up!
Mr D received an email today saying that our class blog was runner-up in the Interface Awards for 2010. Well done everyone for all your hard work. We feel happy that we were second, but we really wanted to win. Never mind...we will give it another go next year.

16/11/10 What's Going On in BD Class?

It was funny this morning because Robert got jammed after trying to learn about homophones. Eddie was asking him questions that had "jam" as an answer. We were all laughing.
We did reading this morning and Mr D was really impressed with how well all the groups read to him. Well done everyone.
For writing we are learning about narratives. We looked at the Writing Fun website to get some ideas about how to write a narrative. www.writingfun.com
We brainstormed our ideas for a story. We used the different parts of the story to sort our ideas out. Then we had a go at writing them.
This afternoon we continued our work about environments. We looked at three different environments. Then we used a venn-diagram to sort out our ideas to see what things were the same and different about these environments.

15/11/10 What's Going On in BD Class?

The morning got off to a very energetic start. The whole syndicate did Jump Jam. It was heaps of fun!
For writing we were making sure that we use our yellow, red and white hat thinking to help us write our weekend reports.
We also learned about homophones. These are words that sound the same but have different meanings and they are spelt differently.
won - one
to win something - the number 1
here - hear
a place - to use your ears

In reading we looked at some tricky vowel sounds. We learnt about "ai" and "ay". There are so many words that make the same sound!
How cool. Mr D got an email today from his friend John Devlin who is a football kit designer. He sent this email after looking at our football kits:

I hope you are well - firstly I must apologise for taking so long to reply - your email ended up being misfiled in my email program and I've only just discovered it - I'm very sorry.

Very interesting to see the class kit designs - lots of zig zags!

Personally I really liked the following ones:

Keesha (loved the yellow shorts and how they worked with the pink and blue top)
Jarden (combination of colours on the second kit)
Dev (lots of pale pink, a very traditional kit colour back in the Victorian age)
Lily (the shorts are great and I LOVE the single sleeve colour on the first kit)

Please pass on my congratulations to your class.
I'm glad I could help and I'm only so sorry I didn't reply to this message earlier.

...and NZ did themselves very proud!!

All the very best
John

It's great to get feedback from an expert! You can see John's football kit website by going to: http://www.truecoloursfootballkits.com/
You can check out our kits at the bottom of the blog or at http://www.wix.com/bazntam/BD-Class-Kits

What an exciting and busy day. See you all tomorrow.
