A Mystery

I wonder who the person is from New South Wales who seems to like all our Letterland pictures and work. They might be at a school that wants to share some ideas with us. It's a bit of a mystery! We might be able to help them.

30/05/12 What's Going On?

We had another very productive day today. Ashleigh led us in Traffic Lights this morning and did a great job.
The Oblongs were learning about "near doubles" and played a new game called Double Somersaults +/- 1. We will keep practising these next week.
For our I Am a Traveller topic we looked our question: I wonder what school is like in France. We read a book about a little boy called Gregoire. We we compared what school is like for children in New Zealand and France.
We weren't to keen about Saturday morning school!

29/05/12 What's Going On?

We worked really hard today. Mr D got us to do our character writing samples this morning. We had to try and remember all the good things that go into a good piece of character writing.

In Maths we beat our best time for Around the World. We did it in 2 minutes 21 seconds. It has taken us a long time to beat our old time. Mr d taught us a new game called Traffic Lights. We had to guess a number that Mr D was thinking. He put a red counter on a number if it was the wrong number, a yellow counter if it was the right number in the wrong place and a green counter if it was the right number in the right place. Mr D won the first game and we won the second game.

For our topic we did some more work about clothes in French. We found out that there are similar words for clothes in French and English.
At lunch time we had a picnic on the mat.

28/05/12 What's Going On?

It has been a great start to the week. After doing some great maths this morning we got stuck into reading. We did some reviewing of how "magic-e" works.

We had a special school assembly for all of those children who got places at the Discovery School Cross-Country. Congratulations to Lucy who was first in the Year 2 Girls.
Congratulations also to all these people who have achieved 25, 50, 75 and 100 nights reading. Kaleb is our first reading centurion!
This afternoon we met Pierre. Pierre wants to find out the French names for all sorts of different clothes.
So tonight he wants everyone to do a bit of research about the names for different items of clothing.

What's Been Going On? - Cross Country

On Tuesday we had our school cross-country. Everyone ran so well. Mr D was really proud of everyone!
Here are some moments from each of the Adventure Syndicate races.

What's Been Going On? - A Frosty Morning

On Monday the day started off as a really frosty one. So we thought we might go out for a walk down on the field. We had such a great time. it was awesome.
When we got back to class we did some amazing descriptions about our frost morning. Brrrr!

What's Been Going On? - Writing

Oh my goodness! We are incredible writers. Mr D is so proud of the amazing writing we have been doing in class. It all started with our amazing Mother's Day character writing. We were learning to make sure that we use lots of Red Hot Chili words and ideas in our writing.
We learnt how to plan our ideas before we start writing.

Then we got stuck into writing our character descriptions. Wow! Mr D was blown away. Here are some of our ideas we used when we wrote about our monsters.
Here are our published monster descriptions. You can check out the full 44 page version at:

What's Been Going On? - Letterland

We have been learning so many more different  ways of making the same sound. Over the past wee while we have been looking at the long-u sound. Here is what we have found out.
The cool thing is that we have been remembering to use all these when we have been doing our writing.

What's Been Going On? - I Am a Traveller

We have been learning how to speak French as part of our I Am a Traveller topic. Every morning Mr D greets us with "Bonjour tous la monde." We all reply "Bonjour Monsieur D." The he asks us "Comment Ã§a va?" The we reply "Comment Ã§a va merci!" We practised introducing our selves to our learning buddies in French. Mr D was really impressed.
We did some more work on our questions about what we want to find out about France. We think these questions are heaps better now.

What's Been Going on in BD Class?

Okay everyone...there has been a whole heap happening over the past three weeks. Mr D apologises that there haven't been any posts over the past two weeks. So...watch out now. Here is everything we have been doing in BD Class.

07/05/12 What's Going on in BD Class?

What a beautiful start to the week. The weather was beautiful and everyone arrived at school with a happy smile on their face. We welcomed back Joseph who has been away in Thailand and Cambodia. He shared about some of his adventures.

In maths today we beat our "Around the World" record by 59 seconds. We are getting better at counting on from the biggest number.

We did some editing of Mr D's weekend writing today. We tried to find better words to use. It really made his writing much more interesting.
For our "I Am a Traveller" topic, we are learning to ask good questions. We talked about open and close, fat and skinny questions. Here are our first attempts at coming up with questions. We did this with our learning buddies.
We think we might need to do a bit of work on these!

We have another "50 Nights Reading person, but we also have two "75 Nights Reading" people now. Well done to Kaleb and Piper!

30/04/12-04/05/12 What's Been Going on in BD Class?

Wow! It has been such a busy week in BD Class. We have been doing amazing character writing, we have travelled around the world, we have finished some amazing artwork, been learning new strategies for maths...we have been working our socks off!

This week we celebrated two groups of people. Firstly there was the group of children who have achieved 50 nights reading... and another group who have achieved 25 nights reading.
Watch out next week to find out who has achieved 75 nights reading!

On Tuesday we travelled around the world. We visited a whole lot of different countries. We went to France, Egypt, South Africa, Holland, Brazil and China. We learned a whole lot of facts about each of these countries. Mr D took us to France. We learned about Paris, some French food and we made baguettes. It was funny because we couldn't understand Monsieur D because he was speaking French. Then he remembered to speak English again.

We all got a passport that we took around with us. It got stamped every time we visited a new country.
We flew from New Zealand to France...and found out how far away France is from New Zealand.

We have been working on planning our writing and using descriptive language in our character descriptions.
