22/03/12 What's Going on in BD Class?

We have had a great day today with Mrs Berney. Lily was our Star of the Day today.
We worked hard at maths this morning and then we read the book "Dragons, Dragons" and we did some really cool writing about knights, dragons and princesses. We were trying hard to remember to use Red Hot Chilli words and ideas.
After morning tea we practised writing "igh" and "i_e" words. We made shields then wrote the words down on the shields.
We finished up the day with Kapa Haka and Library. Tomorrow we have our school disco. It will be really cool.

21/03/12 What's Going on in BD Class?

Hi everyone. It has been a while since we did some posting about what has been going on in our class, so here is an extra big blog entry. The following people have been our most recent Stars of the Day.
Last Friday we made popcorn with Mrs Berney and we read the poem Mmm...Popcorn. We got into groups and we were given a part of the poem to practise. We added some sound effects. Then on Tuesday, Mr D recorded us reading the poem and today he put it together to share with everyone. Check it out!
On Monday we had our wild and windy Athletics Day. It was great to use all the skills we had been practising this term. Everyone tried so hard and did really well.

For writing we have been learning how to write Red Hot Chilli words and ideas. This is when we use really interesting words that make people really want to read our writing. We have done some amazing writing over the past couple of days. You can check our writing out over the next couple of days.

Here is some of our brainstorming for using Red Hot Chilli words and ideas.

We have also been working hard on more of our vowel sounds. This week we looked at the tricky "igh" sound and the "long-o" sound as well.

We have also had a whole bunch of people reach their 25 Nights Reading! Well done to Brooklyn, Holly, Brooke, Thomas, Cameron, Amber, Lucy and Ashleigh!

13/03/12 - 14/03/12 What's Going on in BD Class?

It has been another great couple of days in BD Class today. Keyon and Amber have been our Stars of the Day today.

For maths this morning, Sam won the game of "Beep". The "Circles" were learning to skip count in tens and hundreds. The "Oblongs were learning to skip-count in tens and ones, forwards and backwards.

For writing today we did a buddy activity where we looked at each other's writing and tried to make sure we had all the right things to make it interesting.

For reading we looked at "ie" and "y" and how they make a long-i sound. There were so many words. We found out that words that end in "y" have "i.e." at the end of them when we add "s" or "d". You can see all our words here.
The "Whales" reading group read "Robots Run Riot." They had to design their own special robot that could help out at home or school.
We now have more of our class who have reached the 25 Nights reading club. well done to Michael, Sam, William, Lokesh and Celestine.

12/03/12 What's Going on in BD Class?

We had a great start to the week today. We have been working very hard and we have done some really great work. Joseph was our Star of the Day today.
We kicked off with maths this morning. Finally, a boy won "Beep." Well done Thomas! After maths we did some planning for our writing. Mr D shared about his cool weekend and did a brainstorm. We talked with our new learning buddies about what we will be writing.
For reading we were introduced to another vowel sound. This week we are looking at the "long-i" sound.
After syndicate assembly we got into our learning buddies and we started to look at more of the creatures that live on the rocky shore. Another great day!

09/03/12 What's Going on in BD Class?

What a great day we had today. We started the day doming some statistics. Mrs Berney gave us a survey and we had to ask ten different people about their favourite ice cream flavour. We were doing it because ice cream has "ea" in the middle of it.

After that we did some power writing. We are trying hard to make different word families like"_at" or "_ook" or "_ot". We are getting better at it.

Lokesh and Kaleb achieved their 25 Nights Reading sticker today as well. That makes three people in our class who have done it.
After lunch, our buddy class came by and helped us to create some cool sea creatures. We looked at some of the creatures we found at Island Bay and made our own ones. They looked amazing. Thanks big buddies.
The day wrapped up with Ashleigh taking home Super Goliath. Well done Ashleigh!

07/03/12 What's Going on in BD Class?

Bailey was our Star of the Day. Goliath had a sleep in at Lily's house so he came to school a bit late...much to Lily's relief. Lily did a great piece of writing in the Goliath book.
For news, Amber brought a Buzzy Bee to school. Nearly everyone in the class had a Buzzy Bee when they were little.
Piper won "Beep" today. That's three days in a row for the girls. The boys were getting a bit grumpy about it.

We came up with so many "ea" words today. Mr D was getting tired writing them all down. You can see them all below.
Piper was the first one to get to 25 nights reading today. She put on the special sticker and posed for a photo. I wonder who will be next?

06/03/12 What's Going on in BD Class?

Today we started off with finishing our animal sorting activity from yesterday afternoon. Then we got into our maths. Brooke  was our "Beep" champion today. Lily was our Star of the Day today.
In maths time, the "Circles" were learning to make 3-digit numbers then put them in order. They did really well even though they found it challenging. Mr D beat the class in a game of rockets.

After maths we looked at "ee" and how many words we could find. Wow! We found heaps of them. Then after morning tea, we came up with even more.
This afternoon we did some long lump practise with Mrs Berney. We are getting better at taking off with one foot and landing on two. Some of us still need to remember to jump!
For printing we are doing "b" and "h" this week. They both start the same way so we shouldn't get them muddled up.

06/03/12 G'Day with Roberta and Ella

05/03/12 What's Going on in BD Class?

After a wild weekend it was good to be back to some nice sunny weather. Sophie was our Star of the Day today.
We kicked off the day with maths. We played "Beep" to practise our counting. Haylee was the winner. Then we got into our maths groups for the first time. Mr D taught the "Oblongs" group a game called "Rockets." We had to try and fill up the rocket by rolling the dice and making a number. Then we had to decide where on the rocket it should go. We had 10 goes to fill up the rocket.
We did some weekend recounts for writing today. We were trying to make sure we started off our stories in an interesting way.
This week we are looking at all the vowel combinations that make an "ee" sound. Today we looked at "e and magic-e" There aren't many words that have those letters in them.
After syndicate assembly we did a sorting activity for our topic. We got into groups and we had to give reasons for sorting our animals in that particular way.
