07/12/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

Finally we had a not-so-rainy day today. Shanelle and Logan were our awesome Stars of the Day today.
This morning, Mr D's maths groups did some impressive maths. We were learning to make numbers out of tens and ones blocks. We started playing some maths games to get us ready. You can click on the pictures below to play the games.
Then we started to make numbers. Mr D showed us what a thousand looked like. Then 10 thousand, then 100 thousand, then a million. A million little blocks would be so many!

After maths we went for a rainy walk down to the mysterious bridge.
We wondered what might live under the bridge. After running through the rain to get back to class we did a brainstorm about our "under the bridge" ideas.
Then we had a go at writing our stories. We were trying to use interesting descriptive writing.

06/12/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

It was another busy day in BD Class. We now have 30 people in our class. We hardly fit onto our mat area now! Matthew started school today so he was one of our Stars of the Day with Baxter.
We did some amazing writing again today. Mr D was blown away by the awesome sounding out by everyone. The class spelt out some pretty tricky words.

After morning tea we got stuck into our printing. We have started to practise doing some numbers now because Mr D had seen lots of us doing our numbers around the wrong way. We also practised the letter "x" as well.
This afternoon we did another Kapa Haka practise then went off to learn some tennis skills with Isaac from Grasshopper Tennis. We played some games then practised some hitting. It was pretty tricky.

05/12/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

Today got off to a bit of a rainy start. But it was good to be back at school. We welcomed Niamh to school and she was also our Star of the Day.

We did our maths and writing this morning. In maths we are learning about counting backwards. We are trying to remember the pattern of: 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 then a ten or "ty" number.

We are still working on writing our beginning, middle and end sounds for writing. We did pretty well today.
For reading we did our next blend. It is "spl". Now are getting really tricky!
We won't be having our Kapa Haka performance tonight because the weather is bad. We did a dress rehearsal for the kindy kids today. We sounded great.

28/11/11-02/12/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

WOW! It has been a really busy week in BD Class. Everyone has been working so hard. We have been doing some really good writing over the past week. We have been trying to make sure that we write all the sounds we can hear in a word. Mr D had us working on the whiteboards to spell the words as he wrote his story. You can see how we went by looking at all the ticks above the words we tried to spell.
We have also been doing some tricky blend work. This week we looked at "sc" and "scr". We came up with a whole bunch of words that have those sounds in them.

We have been practising really hard for the Kapa Haka showcase next week. On Friday we made our special headbands for the performance. We will wear them on Monday night when we perform.

We also had some visiting Taiko drummers come to school. These drums come from Japan. The drums we really loud!

We started of with doing maths and writing this morning. We finished of our character writing about someone form Bad Jelly the Witch. We were trying hard to use good describing words to make our writing interesting.
After morning tea we went to see ZeBong the Story Teller. He had a special quilt with pathches. Each patch told a story. He got the teachers and the children to help act out some of the stories. The teachers were very funny. Mr D had to be a grandad and Mrs Arrowsmith got stuck up a power pole. We did lots of laughing!

9/11/11-14/11/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

It has been a pretty hectic few days at school with lots of interesting things going on. On Wednesday we did some more really great writing. We were trying to make sure our writing was much more descriptive and interesting.
You can see that we are making really good attempts at sounding out lots of words in our writing. You can see all the people who helped Mr D sound out his words.

On Thursday morning we had a visit from Mana College's Kapa Haka group. They performed for us and then answered some questions we had. It was awesome! There were only about 12 of them but they could sing really loud and really beautifully. We were sitting right up the front when the boys were doing a fierce haka but we weren't scared!

Check out the highlights of the performance below.

On Friday we had a cool day. We did some fun maths with Mrs Berney and Mrs Arrowsmith. School assembly was fun. We were singing Poi E.

On Monday, Oliver was the Star of the Day
We started of the day with our maths groups. The we got stuck into writing. Mr D shared a story about his weird weekend. See if you can guess what he was doing.
For reading we looked at the blend "br". We came up with heaps of words (including lots of names) that started with that blend.
After lunch we had a special kapa haka practise. We sounded really, really good when we were practising our songs. We finished off the day with printing and then we had a go at throwing the vortex.

What another busy day. Everyone was working so hard. Mr D and Mrs Arrowsmith decided to rearrange the day. In the morning we are starting with maths now. It was really cool because we got to work in small groups. Mr D's groups were learning to read big numbers: like: 325 and 674.

Today's Star of the Day was Summer.
For writing today we trying again to make sure we write our ideas quickly. We are making sure that we use our writing cards, space men and do good sounding out.

07/11/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

Today we had a nice surprise. Mr D was back! It seems like we haven't seen him for ages. Today Ryan and Holly were our Stars of the Day.
This morning we had a tricky letter to do for printing. We practised the letter "s". We tried to make it fit into the letter "o" because it starts in the same place. A lot of us got three stamps because we:
  • started in the right place
  • went in the right direction
  • and made sure our "s" was sitting on the line.
We wrote about our weekend for writing time. We are really trying hard to write all the little words we know such as: I, is, to, the , go, and, in, went, got, we, he... quickly in our stories. Mr D thought we did a really good job of it too.
At reading time we did our new blend for the week. It is "fr". We came up with lots of "fr" words that we could use in our writing.

02/11/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

Busy, busy, busy. It has been one of those kind of days. Ella and Zachary were our Stars of the Day today.

For printing we were practising a whole lot of different letters. We tried: a,d,h and n.
For writing today we watched a You Tube clip about fireworks. It was really cool. We came up with lots of describing words to use in our writing.

In reading we looked at the sound that "dr" makes. We found lots and lots of words that started with that sound.
This afternoon we looked at some Koru Art. We learnt that the kowhaiwhai pattern comes from the fern frond.

This afternoon we looked at some koru art. We learnt that the kowhaiwhai pattern comes from the fern frond. We also had a go at blending colours to make a koru composition look really cool.
