13/11/12 What's Going On

For maths we have been learning about fractions. We know that fractions are really the same as dividing. Mr D found this cool video to help us with our fractions.
We are learning to find the fraction of set. We have been using our division and multiplication skills to work this out.

After morning tea today we planted some seeds. We talked about all the things that a plant needed to grow. We planted some watercress and bean seeds. It is going to be really interesting to see how things grow!

A couple of weeks ago we had Anton and Lucy from Rhythm Interactive come to the school to do a drumming show. It was amazing. There were 200 drums, 200 kids and lots of noise.

07/11/12 What's Going On?

The day started of with Lily's mum coming in to read to us. She read two really cool books called:
We all really enjoyed these stories. The Dr. Seuss story is pretty tricky to read.

We worked really hard on getting our narratives finished. We story boarded out our narratives and took photos of each scene. The next thing is to put these in order and record our stories. Mr D has been really impressed with how well everyone has worked together.

06/11/12 What's Going On?

We had a very productive day today. Because it is book week we are working in pairs to create our own stories. We are taking a story we know well and we're making a few changes to it. We had to plan out our setting, characters, problem and how the problem is solved. Then we wrote down our stories. Tomorrow we are going to be story boarding our narrative then taking photos. We are using all of the toys as our characters, photos as our back grounds then taking photos of them. Then we will put the photos together and record our stories. This the kind of thing we're going to be doing.
Christopher's mum came and read two stories to us today.
 They were:
We really enjoyed them. Because she read "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" we watched a little movie that Mr D did with his class last year. It was funny because Ashleigh, William,. Sophie and Holly looked so little.

05/11/12 What's Going On

We have some champion readers in our class. Check out all of these people who have reached reading milestones.
We have started our new topic. So on Tuesday, Mr D got us into groups and we went out with cameras to take pictures of living and non-living things. We downloaded the photos then sorted them. Here is what we came up with.

To work out how we know if something is living or non-living, we got Cookie Monster to help us. We all thought it was pretty funny.
Now we now the difference. We are going to be doing some more investigations.

26/09/12 What's Going On?

What a crazy day today. The day had only just started when we had our "Shake Out" practise. Everyone had to duck under a table and hold onto the leg, or get into the "turtle" position or get under a doorway like Mr D.

After that excitement Mrs Berney took us for maths, writing and reading. It is so great to see how well everyone is doing with their reading!

This afternoon we started to publish our "I Spy" stories. They are going to look amazing.

Here is some publishing from a while back. We had a go at writing some explanations with illustrations done with KidPix.

What a busy day. We kicked off with maths then got stuck into our reading. We learnt about another two sounds that the letter "a" makes. There were heaps of words!

This afternoon we had a go at making our own "I Spy" pages. Over the rest of the week we will write our riddles so people can find things on the pages. See what you can spot.
A big thank you to Kaleb's mum who spent the day with us helping out the Taniwha wearable arts group. Thank you so much Nicki!

12/09/12 What's Going On?

It was another really busy day in BD Class. We did dome more amazing multiplication work in maths. We set class records for Around the World in our 2s, 5s and 10s.

For writing we finished off our Harry narratives. We looked at the second half of he story. We are learning that as an author, we need to describe the action because people can't see it.

We did some more work on our pieces of wearable art. All of the groups have got started now. They're going to look amazing.

Check out our fantastic football skills from our Ole Soccer session yesterday.
Remember that tonight is the Discovery School Art Exhibition. The hall looks incredible with all these wonderful pieces of art. Make sure your family comes to check it out.

For writing we continued with our "Harry Head in the Clouds" narrative. We turned a cartoon into a narrative.
After morning tea we did our final planning for our pieces of wearable arts. We are now ready to start creating and working on our costumes. Mr D thinks our classroom is going to become a bomb site.

Tomorrow night is the Discovery School Art Exhibition. We are all very proud of our pieces of art. We hope that all our parents and caregivers purchase our great coffee cups. Here is a sneak preview.
Today we celebrated another bunch of children who have achieved their next round of reading stickers. Well done everyone!

The Olympic Report

Check out our Discovery School Olympic Day reports. Welcome to BD Class News!

14/08/12 What's Going On?

Welcome to Maths Week. It has been "all go" in BD Class. On Monday we got stuck into the Maths Week website. Mr D gave us all a special username and code to do a whole lot of fun maths activities. He brought the laptop pod into class so we all had a go at the games.

We can practise these games at home because Mr D got us to glue our usernames and passwords into our reading notebooks. We can check it out by going to www.mathsweek.org.nz.

We got into some more tricky vowel sounds this week as well. It is amazing how many words we can find with these vowel sounds in them!

Our class has a new favourite song! It is called "Good Time" by Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen. We sung it at least 5 times today. Here it is so you can learn the words to the song.
Mr D has finally finished our Olympic Report podcast. You can see them on the next blog post

31/07/12 What's Going On?

It was another busy day in BD Class. This morning we had another go at doing some report writing. This time we wrote about the importance of eating healthy. We brainstormed our ideas then got stuck into writing our reports. We tried to make sure that our ideas were in order.

After morning tea we did some great artwork. We were doing some practise for our Art Exhibition artworks. We are keeping it a bit of a secret what we are going to be doing for the exhibition.

30/07/12 What's Going On?

It was great to be back at school today. We did lots of talking about the Olympics and the opening ceremony. Everyone though the Mr Bean part of the ceremony was really funny. Check it out below.
Kaleb brought some interesting news to school today. He brought a petrified whale bone. It was found on the Louisville Ridge which is in the Pacific Ocean. Some scientists think it might belong to a beaked whale. A beaked whale looks like this:
Before lunch we got to go to the Life Education to see Jane and Harold the Giraffe. We were learning about "Food for Life." Harold was funny because he accidentally squashed a banana he was going to give to his friend Jocko. We learnt about food that is good for our bodies and the food pyramid.

24/07/12 What's Going On?

There was lots going on today in BD Class. We did a writing sample for Mr D this morning then we got stuck into a really good maths session. The Oblongs were learning to make groups of ten when adding numbers together. (3+6+7=__) We know 7+3=10 then add 6 and it makes 17. The Circles were learning to add tens and ones together. (45+23=__) We can go 45, 55, 65 then add three more 66, 67, 68. Or we can go 40+20=60, 5+3=8. That makes 68. That's pretty impressive maths!

For reading, the Bumblebees, Gators and Whales are all learning to ask questions about a book, find key words and use them to find the information.

This afternoon we did another Graham Braddock art workshop. This was all about using colour. We did some pretty awesome looking pieces of art.
