30/08/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

We have had such a fun day today. Sophie was our "Star of the Day" today.

We started of the day doing Jump Jam and our printing BUT then we made VOLCANOES!

We talked about what a volcano was. William said, "The lava is melted rock." ryan said, "A volcano is like a mountain."

We watched a YouTube clip about an eruption to see what it was like.

Then we got to make our own volcanoes. We used sand and then we used leaves and twigs to make them look "real". Mr D put some "snow" on our mountains then put some "magic water" in the volcano and they erupted. They were really cool. Check out the video!

After we made our volcanoes, we brainstormed all our ideas about what we saw, thought and felt. We will add more ideas and we will do some amazing writing about our volcanoes tomorrow.

29/08/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

It has been a cool day today. Sam was Star of the Day.

It was a special day for Monique and Ryan because they got certificates at syndicate assembly. They said they felt "good" when they got their certificates.

One of letters of the week is "v". We went out and had a look at some vans in the car park. We learnt that when we say "vvvvvvvvv" properly, our lips vibrate.

We did some good writing today. We are focusing on making sure that we leave spaces between words and that we try and say the beginning sounds of words we don't know.

This afternoon we did some maths groups. The Oblongs are learning to make and write "teen" numbers.
The Circles are learning about the difference between "teen" and "ty" numbers.

26/08/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

We had such a cool day today. Isabelle was our Star of the Day.

We did lots of interesting things. Mr D brought his big blue monster truck to school. He surprised us when he drove it out of his office.

He put a camera on it and then we went outside. He turned the camera on and we chased the truck around the playground. We made a movie and chose some cool music to show what happened.

After that we did some writing about the truck. We are trying to start our stories in more interesting ways.

This week is "Keep Porirua Beautiful" week. We went out to clean up around the school. We were super rubbish pickers.

 We dis a great job of cleaning up!

We had hamburgers for lunch today. They were delicious. Have a great weekend everyone and we'll see you on Monday.

24/08/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

It was so nice to have such a sunny day today. We all got to play outside and have a great time at morning tea and lunch. William was our Star of the Day today.

We did some amazing printing today. Mr D was so proud of us. We looked at the letter "m" today. It is very similar to doing an "n".

We have been learning about positional language with Mrs Berney. We have been learning about using words like:

on, under, beside, in, on top, in-between, next to

We made houses for the tiny teddies and wrote about where our teddy was.

We also made a Humpty Dumpty each. We made a wall of all the words we are learning and we put our Humpties on the wall. We wrote statements about where our Humpties were.

We did some great writing today as well. We are working hard to make sure that we leave spaces between each word and try and write all the sounds we hear in a word.

23/08/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

It was another busy day in BD Class. Bede was our Star of the Day today.

Mrs Stewart did reading with us this morning as well. We are working hard on our reading and we re getting much better. Mr D was really impressed with how we went with our printing today. Everyone is trying so hard to form their letters properly.

This afternoon Mr D taught us how to play some of the maths games so we can do them by ourselves.

It was so good to have everyone at school today.

22/08/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

It was nice to see everyone at school today. Zayne had his first day at school and was Star of the Day.

For printing we are practising the letter "n". It is nearly the same as "h" except it starts at halfway instead of the top.

We did some good writing and reading today as well. Each group is learning a different thing:

Roosters: We are learning to point to each word as we say it.

Goldfish: We are learning to point to each word as we say it and say the first sound in words we don't know.

Bumble Bees: We are learning to recognise and read words we know.

Gators: We are learning to read smoothly and use different ways of working out words we don't know.

This afternoon we did some large ball skills. We were learning to bounce the ball with one hand then walk the ball around the court. We are getting much better at it now.

17/08/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

It has been another cool day today in our class. It has stopped snowing now. Jade was our Star of the Day today.

For printing, we are looking at the letter "h". 

We learnt the Harry Hat Man printing song then did lots of practise. Mr D was so impressed with everyone's printing today. After writing we played "Beep" for maths. Then we did our maths groups. Mr D has taught us a new maths game on the Mimio. It is called "Whackamole." You can check it our by clicking on the picture.

After lunch we went to the library. Then we did some art. We learnt about an artist called Piet Mondrian. He did really cool pictures using lines and primary colours. 

  

We had a go at doing our own Mondrian designs. You can check them out in our class.

16/08/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

Yay! Mr D was back at school today. He had a very croaky voice but we could hear him when he used the microphone. Ryan was our Star of the Day today.

It was funny thinking that he was able to put "snowing" on the weather chart today! Mr D also showed us a movie he made about when it snowed at his place on Sunday.

We went for a winter walk this morning. We went down to the play ground and walked on the ice. Jade said it "sounded like crunching." Mr D thought that was a really good describing word. We crunched around and picked up the ice and watched our "dragon breath."

When we got back to class, we did some "Cold Day" writing.

We also did some great work in our reading and maths groups today. Mr D was really impressed with the way we cooperated with one another.

08/08/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

This week is Maths Week. There are all sorts of things happening this week for Maths Week. We had two challenges today. We had to guess how long it would take Mr Thompson to drink 5 raw eggs and how many shots Mrs Jennings could score in the netball hoop.

We did some great writing this morning. Mr D shared some of his own weekend writing with us then we had a go our selves. We are looking at being able to write "I went to..." by ourselves.

We are trying to make sure that we start our ideas with a capital letter and finish with a fullstop. Bede did some really good writing today too. Check it out.

02/08/11 - 05/08/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

Wow! What a busy week in BD Class! It has been fun getting to know our new teacher and new friends. We have been learning about these letters of the week:

We did some great writing this week as well. We are learning to try and say the first sound in words we are trying to write. Our words of the week for this week were:

up down

We started to look at things people do to show they support a particular country. We noticed that lots of people like to paint their faces or wear masks. We used KidPix to have a go at colouring in some masks. We were learning to use the "fill bucket." Here are our masks that we coloured in.

On Friday we were welcomed to Discovery School with a special powhiri. It was really cool to be welcomed to school be over 400 other children.

We also had lots of fun blowing bubbles this week. We read a cool book called "Bubbles." We went outside to try and blow our own bubbles.

What a cool week. I can't wait for next week. Have a great weekend everyone!

01/08/11 What's Going On in BD Class?

What a busy day! There were lots of things happening today. We had four new people start school today. Welcome to Tegan, Ella, Sam and Bede. All of these guys have big brothers and sisters at Discovery School.

Bede was our Star of the Day today. The Star of the Day gets to do the weather chart every morning.

We had a powhiri for our new principal Mrs Jennings. Mr D. said he was so impressed with us because we were really good.

We did some printing this morning as well. We are learning to start in the right place and finish on the line.

We did "I Statements" after lunch. This is when we say something nice about someone in the class. It is a really special time of the day.

This afternoon we were all pretty tired so we did some rotations of some of our reading games. We had some people practising on the Mimio too. 

What a cool day! It is going to be a great week!
